The Canadian art filmmaker Bruce LaBruce is no stranger to transgression. His work has depicted pornographic bloodbaths, zombie necrophilia and amputee fetishism. By those standards, his latest project, “Obscenity,” the subject of a new show at the New York gallery the Hole, might seem rather tame. Like the artist Francesco Vezzoli’s notorious “Greed,” a mock advertisement that starred Natalie Portman and Michelle Williams having a cat fight over a perfume bottle, it’s a critique of fragrance campaigns, but it bears LaBruce’s unmistakable stamp.

Instead of Hollywood celebrities, his ads star a black priest and a white nun who appear to have a sexual relationship. In one, a sinister-looking censer appears; another shows a holy wafer placed lovingly into a man’s mouth. “Putting the body of Christ on the tongue has always had a sexual or sensual connotation,” LaBruce says. The show will feature 22 photos, a making-of documentary and a commercial, as well as an actual scent: a unisex eau de parfum, developed with the perfumer Kim Weisswange, which pointedly mixes the sacred and the profane. It combines 27 essential oils, including frankincense, cedar and sandalwood, with holy water from Lourdes. “It’s warm, flowery and exotic,” says LaBruce, who will sell a limited edition of 100 bottles in commemorative packaging. The bottle cap, designed by Jonathan Johnson, shows a naked woman in heels wearing a nun’s habit, kneeling on a holy wafer perched on a tongue.
